In 1869 the explorer Sir Samuel Baker FRGS was commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, “To supress the slave trade”. He and Lady Baker faced immense difficulties. They faced opposition from local officials, hostile terrain and difficulties navigating Indigenous differences before finally the slavers were beaten.
