In the summer of 1989, the student Ed arrives on the East German island of Hiddensee and finds himself absorbed into a community of drop outs around the charismatic Kruso. While pursuing an ideal of inner freedom, they operate their own special way of helping those that try to escape from the GDR via the Baltic Sea to Denmark.
