Cartoons are considered among the greatest treasures of the Renaissance. When Leo X was elected pope in 1513 he commissioned Raphael, the leading artist of the day, to produce a series of tapestry cartoons for the Sistine chapel in the Vatican Palace. These magnificent and unique paintings illustrate passages from the Bible concerning the lives of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
